The Ontario Youth Symphony Program – Purpose and Mission 

The purpose of the Southland Symphony’s Ontario Youth Symphony program is to enrich the lives of student musicians with outstanding educational and performance opportunities for all levels, in a nurturing and challenging environment without discrimination. 

Working together with professional leadership, parents, and highly qualified music educators, the Ontario Youth Symphony and Wind Ensemble will provide the finest possible training with rehearsal and performance opportunities to enable the students to develop, share and further enrich their lives and the life of the community through the power of music.   

OYS joins the Southland Symphony Orchestra’s mission to use the power of music to lift the human spirit. We engage, uplift, and educate the diverse communities of Southern California’s Greater Ontario and Inland Empire area by coming together to perform and inspire through exceptional musical experiences.   

The Ontario Youth Symphony and Wind Ensemble offers music students an opportunity to participate in weekly rehearsals in orchestral and wind ensemble settings. The youth symphony program has several ensembles to suit children at any level of music development along the way. OYS believes that music is proven to enhance student performance in all academic areas. 

Tuition includes the following: 

  • Weekly rehearsals. 
  • Concentrated study of repertoire drawn from classic, romantic, and contemporary sources. 
  • Direction by professional conductors and music educators. 
  • Coaching by professional musicians. 
  • Solo and chamber music performance opportunities. 
  • Major Concerts each term. 
  • “Side by side” concerts with the Southland Symphony 
  • Opportunities to play in various recitals, events, and concerts in the community. 
  • Very advanced students may have the opportunity to play with the Southland Symphony Orchestra. 

The Ontario Youth Symphony and Wind Ensemble generally includes strings, winds, brass and percussion players. Keyboard, guitar and harp may also participate Emphasis is placed on orchestral/wind ensemble performance skills, musicianship, ensemble technique and repertoire building.
